The FIX EM UP project in Aputula, led by Alice Springs Police and supported by Waltja, brought local youth and adults together to repair donated bikes. It provided hands-on learning, instilling pride, and promoting physical activity and road safety while strengthening community spirit.
Alice Springs Police generously donated around 20 BMX and mountain bikes to Waltja for the FIX EM UP project in the Aputula community.
The community's response was overwhelming as local youths quickly organised to fix the bikes, completing all repairs in just two days.
The program also included a creative element where students designed t-shirts to promote the bike project. Once the t-shirts were printed, the young people took great pride in the bikes they repaired and were eager to start riding and learning the road rules.
The bike program was a tremendous success, with every young person wanting a bike. Even parents expressed interest in having bikes to ride around the community. It was a fantastic example of community spirit and support for one another.
